The increase of awareness towards the environmental responsibility and sustainable growth has changed the corporate perspective of doing business. Today the topic Green HRM is not only restricted to creating an awareness towards environmental affairs, rather emphasis that the social well as the Economic wellbeing mutually for the organization and the employees within a broader prospect.
Need for GHRM.
The “Magna Carta” on Human Environment was declared in the first United Nation’s (International) Conference on Human Environment held in June 1972 in Stockholm declared that to defend and improve the human environment for present and future generation have become an imperative goal for mankind
Even though the Green HRM literature is predominantly western. Given the importance of Asian economic development for environmental management, this is an important gap for future studies to reduce.
Ways of going green.
Recruitment
GHRM can start way before the hiring. The job description (JD) should be designed and approved by coordinating with other departments. The JD should reflect on sustainability and Ecological commitment of the employer. This will help improve the company branding.
Shortlisting of candidates must be strictly as per the JD, employees who possess approaches, behaviours, knowledge and skills those are similar to the company, familiar with the organizational culture and who will be able to reflect the Company policy must be accepted on board.
Green initiative in HR process (E-HR)
Introduction of Electronic platforms can be a major leap to show the organizations commitment towards Ecological social responsibility. Modern state of art technologies like cloud servers can be used in daily business operations and inbuilt HR portal can be used to cater all employee requirements.
Traditional HR related tasks are mostly on papers, but an organization can start adapting to paperless or Electronic based HR processes. Today E- Business and E-learning has changed traditional process from paper to paperless workspace. The same model can be applied in HR process where everything will be Electronic based.

Even though the core aim of GHRM is Corporate branding, Social and ecological commitment, saving on cost and making the company more attractive. Below are few additional benefits
- Employee retention and reduced labour turnover.
- Possible increase in sales by improved strong company branding.
- Organization can be more comfortable of employing a green workforce and be proud of the impact that the other organizations doesn’t have.
- Innovations will increase (as a way to reduce waste and efficient use of resources). This will ultimately result in profit
- Rebates and tax benefits.
Green Compensation & Termination.
In simple terms, the organization must recognize the contribution of employees in creating a sustainable company. The accomplishment of the company strategic sustainability goals (for a certain extend) is in the result of the employee’s performance and work.
Compensation can be
- Monetary
- Non-monetary
- Recognition
Apart from the above, the company should take actions for non-compliance to the green strategy and policies. Depending on the seriousness and the impact company should take actions where ecological unfriendly behaviour can account for breach of contract and possibly a dismissal. If this happens an exit interview is crucial to evaluate the perception of the employee on the organizations ecological policies.
