In today’s competitive and rapid changing business world, learning and development has become crucial part of business. L&D is a part of HR led by learning and development managers, and are responsible in building a proper L&D approach within the organization. The L&D module must be inclusive of both theoretical and technological aspects. The purpose of L&D is to enable employee upskill whilst enabling the employers to increase the employee productivity and improve company culture, simultaneously matching the employee’s goals and performance similar to the organization. The L&D team is responsible for finding and filling the skill gaps within the employees and the team.

Why is L&D important for an organization?

L&D is crucial for the success of a business, apart from the upskilling it also can help an organization is many aspects.

Employees prefer Learning and Development.

Employees when applying for jobs are looking for options on whether they have chances for learning and development, they understand that job as an opportunity to learn and grow. A whopping 87% of the GEN Z employees weigh Learning and Development vital in the job than that of a 69% GEN X with same thoughts (Gallup, 2016).

Retention is better than Hiring

Hiring is costly, apart from that losing employees who are productive and loyal is of no good for the organization. A massive 93% of the employees are more likely to retain in the company provided invested in their Learning and Development. So it can be derived that investing on the L&D is helping retention and on the other hand it’s equally important to build the trust with the employer (Immanuel, 2021).

Improved bottom line.

There is no denial that right employees are an organizations pinnacle of great success. Organization that uses to L&D for filling the skill gaps and upskilling employees by focusing on their strengths have reported profit hikes between14% to 29%. An IBM study depicts that a well-trained teams boosted their productivity by 10%.

Minimizing organizational Risk.

L&D can also help in mitigate risks through proper compliance training and workplace safety training.  It is the duty on an organization to ensure safety working environment by proper trainings. Also the company must focus on implementing an effective ethics training program which can help employees work better. This can prevent the company falling into lawsuits for failure in compliance with industry standards.

How to make L&D successful.

L&D must be inclusive of Soft skills, Micro learning, Get managers involved, integrate learning into employee experience.

Soft Skills should focus on areas like leadership, communication, collaboration and time management. Even though some employees might have this inherited, they can always be improved and for those who are lacking can simply learn and execute. 

Micro learning, L&D should be designed in a way between the employees and employers requirement, it should not affect the employee productivity and also must be able for the employee to grasp the information. Moreover the focus must be that not to buy time on breaks and personal time for L&D.

Get Managers Involved - Managers well know what is required for the team members to achieve the common goals. LinkedIn studies shows that 56% of the employee would take courses suggested by the managers. IF involving manager is an issue explain them it is their responsibility to train their staffs in order to achieve the overall company goal (Meghan M,Biro, 2018).

Conclusion.

A company must understand what is L&D and the place for it within the company. Once it is understood baby steps should be taken to boost L&D despite the size of the business. The Skill gaps must be identified and basic training programme must be started and also the learning objective must be written to create a clear learning goals.
