Harassment is experienced worldwide, outcomes are severe. Any
unacceptable behaviour that is of an offensive nature which daunt, usually
violates dignity of a person and creates an unfriendly and demean circumstances
is known as harassment. The Event can be one time or repetitive however the
severity and the impact on the victim categorizes harassment.
Workplace harassment can vary from discrimination, abusive
power, verbal and physical violence, sexual harassment etc.
Impact on the Business.
Employee wellbeing is the business wellbeing, failure to
protect the safety and ensure peaceful workplace can negatively impact the
business. Namely it can be, shattered employee morale, declined productivity,
absenteeism, turnover, damage to the good will of the employer. Additionally
the organization can be liable for the actions of an employee provided that no
action taken to prevent harassment. This can be applicable even if the employee
had left the organization.
Preventive Measures to Stop Workplace Harassment.
Organizations must invest time to stipulate a set of policy to prevent unacceptable behaviour in order to protect the employees and ensure a harassment free environment.
Anti-Harassment Policy.

An anti-harassment policy should be developed, it should be
inclusive of what and what not is acceptable at the workplace. The policy has
to mention all types of workplace harassment, it would be impressive if the
policy speaks about scenarios. Policy should be with zero-tolerance to slim the
misconducts. Consequences for non-compliance should also be part of the policy.
The policy must be disseminated to the workforce and briefed to the new
recruits.
Training For All Employees.
Training is an effective measure and tool to disseminate the
harassment policy within the team and eliminate the workplace harassment. This
can be done with the help of HR specialist. The training should speak about the
harassment. Training should be done for all the employee groups separately and
provide information that is relevant to their position in the company.
Clear and fair Complaint Process
A transparent complaint process must be set to resolve the
conflict. A staff should be aware on how exactly to file a complaint against
harassment. It’s the obliged that the company will take swift actions against
the complaint with fully investigation in a timely and fair manner. It is a
must to ensure that no adverse action will be raised against for standing up
for right cause.
Communication Channels
The whole idea of this to ensure that the employees have
access to report a harassment through more than one channel directly with the
Human resource management. This will be helpful for the employees to shout out
about the harassment in case if it was from their direct supervisor or
managers. Such communication channels can be E-mails, online messaging
platforms, an inbuilt application.

Conclusion.
To conclude it is crucial to understand despite of
implementing policy, preventing and slicing of harassment in workplace is
always challenging, and requires to strive to make it a success. Managers and
supervisor are the closest to their team members, thus they should create a
healthy environment and solve any harassment issues professionally. Having
close relationship with the team will enable to identify any behavioural
pattern changes, interrelate within the team mates both formally and informally
and also 1 to 1 sessions with staffs. Employee’s approach for assistance should
be embraced with utmost respect and professionality. Should there be any
disciplinary action support of HR should be sort.
Showcase the team members’ respect and encourage everyone else the same. Be mindful of the actions as these are cues for the team. Communicate best practices during meeting and encourage participation and team building activities in order to achieve a healthy working conditions.

Well written article. Companies should clearly outline the harassment so that employees should know where is the line not to cross because certain company culture is different to the other.

ReplyDeleteHarassment is one of the worst things that can be done by the top management of the organization. because due to harassment company performance can drop drastically and industrial disputes can occur. most of the time harassment will end up in court. Therefore HR personnel must be fair enough to every employee of the company.
